I gathered information from a sample of 25 college students of varying ages and sexual orientation in order to gain an insight into what content should be included in my college magazine through the use of a small survey. I decided to ask several questions which would give me information most relevant to me.
The bar chart featured above shows the results to the first question in my survey; what would you most like to see featured in a college magazine? The results show that fashion was the most desired choice of content with 24% opting for it, whilst college news, general news and music were the least desired content ideas boasting 12% each.
I also used my survey to find out a reasonable price for my magazine. 40% of college students in my survey sample said they would want to pay under £1 for the magazine. 34% were willing to pay between £1.01 and £2 and finally 26% of people surveyed were willing to pay over £2. These results suggest to me that college students aren't willing to pay a lot for a college magazine or they are simply not interested in purchasing one altogether.
I also asked whether the students would prefer the magazine to be formal or informal. A massive 90% would prefer a college magazine that is informal rather than formal. Students perhaps prefer to be more entertained than they do informed.
These results will influence what is included on my magazine cover page; my coverlines will on the whole represent interviews and articles about fashion. My price will also be affected, as will the tone of my magazine cover. It will advertise features that are more likely to entertain than they are to inform.
In order to gather more accurate research results about my target audience I would target my survey more towards personal preferences and build a portfolio of student interests. To add, I would also a lot more questions - my survey was very narrow.
Featured also is an image representing my realistic target audience.
